The aim of this self-promotional project was to create an updated version of the classic board game, designed to appeal to an upmarket trend-led audience. Taking inspiration from the Japanese art style ‘superflat’, I created a bespoke Tokyo version of Monopoly from scratch. In addition to the board design, I also redesigned the property, chance and community chest cards with an emphasis on typography and flat blocks of colour.

Colour: I pulled colour from my research on Tokyo, with an emphasis on neons paired with urban browns and greys.

Board: The board is much busier, more colourful and treated in a similar way to an infographic, the aim being for the board to teach the player about the different districts that make up Tokyo.

Property: I chose to make the property cards more graphical, with icons for the houses and hotels to appeal to the more graphically-minded user. By using bright colours on black I wanted to suggest the similiarity of the cards to actual buildings in Tokyo, lit up in neon at night.

Credit: In tune with the futuristic theme, money has been replaced by credits. And, like most things in Japan, the money is a lot smaller than in the rest of the world.

Utilities: No modern Tokyo would be complete without water, electricity and the metro.

Community Chest & Chance: In addition to the existing cards I created some new entries specially for Tokyo.
